Mathematics

The study of mathematics is mandatory from Kindergarten to Year 10. 

By studying mathematics, students learn to work mathematically – developing fluency, understanding, problem-solving, reasoning and communication skills.

The syllabus consists of the following strands:

  • number and algebra
  • measurement and geometry
  • statistics and probability.

New Mathematics K-2 syllabuses ready to teach

The new Mathematics K–2 syllabuses must be taught in all NSW primary schools from Term 1, 2023.

Schools will continue to teach existing English and Mathematics 3–6 syllabuses until the new syllabuses become available for preparation and planning in 2023 and are taught in all schools in 2024.
